USED BOAT REVIEW by Mike Gridley Tested Summer 2012 ( Boatbuys.com/ Powerboat TV}

"Part of the Brunswick Boat Group, Bayliner turned out some truly feature-packed and spacious motor yachts from 1997 to 2002. One of the finest examples of these luxurious cruisers is the line’s flagship, the 5788 Motor Yacht.

Dramatically modernized and upgraded from earlier Bayliner motor yacht offerings, the 2000 model is as striking and impressive now as it was when it was launched, making them sought-after used buys.

From high docks, you can step aboard amidships or down into the cockpit easily via the wide gunwales and steps. Boarding aft via the large swim platform, the 5788 presents you with port and starboard transom gates into the sizeable cockpit, which is protected by the bridge overhang. Moulded steps lead to the side decks and up to the bridge.

While the side decks are a bit narrow aft, there is a solid rail and the deck widens past the pilothouse doors, which provide the best access for moving forward. The 5788 is outfitted with oversized hawsers, cleats and windlass in a recessed well at the bow.

Everyone will appreciate the spacious and functional layout of the pilothouse. The helm is expansive, yet all of the controls, engine instruments, and upgraded navigational screens and systems are conveniently within sight and reach. The view forward and out the doors is excellent while seated in the high-backed, multi-adjustable, leather-centred helm chair that will keep the captain comfortable for hours. A jump seat to port and an aft sofa allow the crew to enjoy the view while underway as well.

Curved stairs lead from the pilothouse to the three staterooms below. At the top is the first of the boat's electrical panels. The second panel is under the counter in the pilothouse cabinet.

Fully forward, the guest stateroom rivals other master staterooms with its island berth, twin hatches, four ports and teak cabinets. It also has a private entry to the shared head, with sink and vanity, separate shower and a VacuFlush toilet. Opposite the head is a third cabin with twin bunks, suitable for two, which features a hanging locker and under bunk drawers.

If you plan to enjoy extended stays aboard, you will appreciate the washer and dryer that are hidden in a locker in the companionway.

The full-beam master, located under the pilothouse aft, is both spacious and wonderfully trimmed out in teak. The stateroom is exceptionally well appointed with dressing table and drawers, full-size closet, night tables, bookshelves and a second closet. Opposite the bed are the TV, a well-appointed vanity and a private head complete with a bathtub.

One really great feature of the 5788 is the pilothouse, which is a wonderful place to operate a boat from. But the salon is really the big selling feature. It's an open airy space, right from the aft deck through to the galley. To port and aft, an L-shaped sofa and hi-lo table sit opposite the refreshment centre, with sink, ice maker, bottle and glass storage, and the home entertainment system with satellite.

The galley on this Bayliner is exceptional. Features include Corian counters, electric oven and cooktop, and a full-size refrigerator. Nice touches are the dishwasher, trash compactor, and plentiful cupboards and drawers. To starboard, the comfortable dinette seats six. Overall, the style and quality of materials and the fit and finish throughout are remarkable given the price of the 5788 when new.

An open stairway and hatch leads up to the flybridge. Protected by custom canvas, the upper helm is as well-equipped and comfortable as the pilothouse. The bridge has its own refreshment centre, as well as a small settee and locker. And, when the tender is launched from the aft end of the bridge, the free deck will host a sizable open-air party and multiple deck chairs.

The aftermarket stern and bow thrusters help us get underway. Her handling is best described as stately and relaxed, exactly as a luxury motor yacht should cruise.

Finding a real value in a 59-foot yacht may seem at odds given their price on the used market, but that's what you get with any of the big Bayliners. When models like this 5788 were rebranded as Meridian in 2003, the price jumped significantly so a 2002 or earlier Bayliner Pilothouse is a better deal on the used market."
